Scheels is a popular sporting goods store with locations in many large cities across the United States. Scheels is known for its wide selection of sports, outdoor and leisure items as well as its knowledgeable staff.
The Scheels chain was founded in 1876 by Jacob and George Scheels in Omaha, Nebraska. The Scheels brothers started out as merchants selling liquor, tobacco, bread and other groceries to local farmers. In 1879 they opened their first store on North 16th Street in Omaha.
Jacob Scheels died in 1902 and his brother George continued to run the business until his death in 1939. At that time the business was run by their three sons: Walter, John and Thomas. Thomas became president of the company after his father’s death and he ran it until his own death in 1966.
During Thomas Scheels’ tenure, the company grew to have over 175 stores across six states: Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado. In 1959 the company merged with Hudson’s Department Store Company creating what was then called Scheels-Hudson Stores Incorporated. The combined company operated 179 stores across eight states under that name before reverting back to the Scheels name in 1961.
In 1966 ownership of the business passed from Thomas Scheels’ heirs to Fred Meyer Stores Inc., a regional chain based out of Oregon which at the time had just thirteen stores nationwide. Fred Meyer promptly closed all but fifteen of these stores within two years leaving
